Established in the early 1800’s by the Dutch East India Company, Contreberg Wine Farm has been a cornerstone of the Cape’s agricultural heritage. Nestled in the heart of Darling Hills, the farm was initially used to supply fresh produce and meat to passing trade ships. It has since grown into a family-owned estate, passed down through the Pretorius Versfeld family, who have nurtured the land and its potential for over a century.

THE WINEMAKING JOURNEY

Wine grape production began in the 1990s, marking the beginning of Contreberg’s journey as a premier wine producer. With its rich history, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking wildflower displays during spring, Contreberg offers not just wine, but a connection to nature’s bounty and South Africa’s deep agricultural roots.

RESPONSIBLE FARMING

At Contreberg, we believe in responsible farming, where sustainable practices and ecological respect guide every decision we make. Protecting our soils, preserving our natural landscapes, and fostering biodiversity are at the heart of our mission. Our vineyards flourish with minimal intervention, allowing the natural elements of the Darling Hills and the Atlantic breeze to define the character of each harvest.

WHAT SETS US APART

LOCATION & CLIMATE

Contreberg, renowned as the pioneer of Sauvignon Blanc in the region, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights, ideal for grape cultivation.

The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, just 15km away, brings cool breezes that temper the heat and contribute to the perfect ripening of our grapes

SOIL DIVERSITY

Our vineyards are rooted in a rich tapestry of soils – sandy, loamy, and granite-based – ideal for nurturing high-quality vines.

These well-drained soils, composed of a mix of old and young formations, provide an excellent foundation for producing wines that express the distinct character of the Darling Hills terroir

VITICULTURE

The vineyards are carefully oriented southwest to maximize sun exposure, ensuring optimal ripeness.

We use a combination of bush and trellis systems to cultivate the vines, allowing each grape variety to flourish in its preferred environment.
